Micah Wood Micah began studying surfboard shape and design at the age of 12. At 13 years old, he started riding for Christenson Surfboards, and watched Chris Christenson shape his boards for about 3 years, until he was offered the opportunity to be on the Gordon & Smith Surf Team. He began working with some new ideas with Masi Saili and watched him shape his boards for around 6 years. He then started working closely with Ernie Higgins and Chris Darby on refining the Gordon & Smith Surfboard designs. He couldn't take it any more watching everyone else shape his boards, so he started shaping his own. And now, even at his young age, he has become quite a talented shaper and could very well be one of the few upcoming of the next generation of shapers that still shapes surfboards the traditional way.
Name: Micah Wood Hometown: San Diego, California Home Surf Spot: Tourmaline, Pacific Beach. Who taught you how to shape? "Ernie Higgins and Chris Darby taught me the most about the art of shaping, but I mainly just watched everyone shape my boards...Chris Christenson, Masi Saili, Ernie Higgins..." What shaper do you look up to? "I would have to say Skip Frye. It seems like more and more shapers now days don't surf anymore, but Skip is still out there surfing almost every day. Anyone can tell that he shapes and designs surfboards because he loves to surf and wants to make a good board, not just so he can make a quick buck in this odd modern surf industry." Favorite board to shape: "A surfboard that noserides really well." Top three favorite bands: The Beatles, The Abyssinians, and Bob Marley. Hobbies: "Skateboarding, doing my artwork, making surfboards, playing guitar, drinking coffee." Favorite Quote: "Where's my pencil..." "Where's my pen..."
